Interior Wood Shutters

Custom Shutters by Lafayette are manufactured from North American hardwoods such as basswood and poplar. Resistance to shrinkage and warpage make North American hardwoods an ideal wood window treatment.

Each shutter panel is constructed with a top rail, bottom rail and someimtes, a divider rail. Rails will vary in width, depending on the louver size and finished panel length. The rail thickness will always be either 5/8″ for a 3/4″ stile, or 7/8″ for a 1 1/16th stile. The face width will be 1 1/4″ for a traditional 3/4″ stile and 2″ for a plantation 1 1/16″ stile. Center rails will be inserted or request for no charge even if not required by panel length limitations. See product data pages for requirements on divider rails. Tension adjusting screws will be added to plantation horizontal louvered panels upon request or as deemed necessary by Lafayette. Shutters with r 1/2″ louvers will have tension adjusting screws. Tension adjusting screws provide more stability and strength to the shutter panel.

Wood blinds

Wood blinds from Lafayette are manufactured from the highest grade Poplar and Basswood available. Our goal is to find the best raw materials on the market, construct our blinds for a lifetime of durability, and pass the beauty of our products on to you.
Easily coordinate with the color of wood flooring and fine wood furniture.
The 2-inch to 3-inch slat sizes create a look similar to that of a plantation shutter.
Blinds made with the 2 5/8-inch and 3-inch slat widths produce a smaller stack of slats at the top of your window when fully raised, than their 2-inch or 1-inch counterparts. This is because the wider the slat, the fewer slats necessary, resulting in a shorter stack of slats when fully raised.
Effectively control outside light by tilting the wood slats with a wand or cord while providing necessary privacy. A room can be darkened substantially when the slats are fully closed.
Simple to operate. Blinds can be pulled up to allow an open view to the outside. Please note that if you intend to pull your wood blinds up regularly, carefully consider the size of your window and the resulting weight of the blind. The larger a blind’s size the heavier the weight.
The heavier the weight, the greater the effort required to raise and lower the blind.
To reduce wear and tear on cords, fully open slats before pulling the blind up. This reduces friction and requires less effort.
Easy to maintain and very durable.

Wooden blinds consist of horizontal wood slats that can be tilted open or close for light control and privacy. Like fine furniture, wood blinds add a special touch of warmth and rich, natural beauty to any room. Wooden blinds are available in 1-inch, 2-inch, 2 5/8-inch and 3-inch wide slat sizes, in a full range of finishes, from stains and paints to a rougher sandblasted finish. The 1-inch slats create a busy look, limiting your view to the outside.

Based upon your specific situation though, you may need a 1-inch slat size. Wooden blinds made with 2-inch wide slats provide a traditional look and are the most popular of the widths available. The 2 5/8-inch and the wider 3-inch slats provide a shutter look and offer a less obstructed view to the outside; because the slats are wider, it takes fewer slats to construct the blind and thus the slats rest farther apart.

Contrasting colors

Contrast: The Attention Getter

Using color to draw attention toward something or away from something is a trick as old as the animals. (Think of the brilliantly colored males of many species luring predators away from their nests and families.)

In the top photo, the yellow of the shades does a few things:

It draws the eye toward the shades and away from the room. It also contrasts with the rest of the decor, even though it would be considered to be a similar color in the range of the rest of the room.

If you are designing a room that will focus on the restfulness of the chaises, you have missed it, because my attention is first drawn and continues to be pulled by the yellow of the shades. On the other hand, if drawing attention to your shades is your goal, for instance if you are the shade manufacturer, you want your ‘audience’ to notice your shades, your design is a success.

Consider what you are trying to accomplish with your colors and patterns; for instance a tan shade would calm the room more or a deeply patterned shade would compliment the room and draw attention away from an unwanted view of the carpet or furniture that needs to be re-upholstered but might not be in the plans for a few years.

Getting Contrast Just Right

Like Goldilocks, we like it “Just Right!” and need to consider this when we are designing a space: consider how much contrast we need to turn up the volume or calm it down for the purpose for which we are designing. Too much contrast can quickly cause tension and physically exhaust us. Too little contrast can can make us feel like we are lost in a bowl of oatmeal.

Color contrast is necessary. It helps us also know the difference between the floor and a step, the window or door and the trim, the trim and the wall. Contrasts, even slight, help define the space we are in.

When designing with color, remember to train your eyes to take a look at the collection of colors, the collection of shapes, as well as the collection of furnishings and fixtures. When you do that, you enter the world of the artist and can enjoy our work…not only that you have just upgraded your value once again!

Deco Candy Colors offer lots of contrast but don’t be fooled: it’s also very busy here because of the shapes and the amount of pattern created by the many lines and juxtaposition.

A Monochrome Home? Not Necessarily

In the book by the same name, Monochrome Home, Kelly Hoppen creates soft, sensuous spaces simply by using different values of the same color. She creates a sense of peace by softening the relationship between the colors.

A lack of chromatic contrast allows a room to inspire a sense of calm regardless of whether or not the color is muted (as in the above image) or highly saturated (as below).

Turn Down the Noise, Turn UP the Color

Limiting color contrast is one way to reduce the ‘noise’ in a room. Other ways to do this include reduce the amount of pattern, limit the diagonal lines, and limit the number of objects that create contrast

Even though highly saturated, this color scheme is calm due to limited contrast.

S.Trask Vender promptly called and made appointment to come to home to take measurements for shades. Showed up exactly on time and on day promised. Took measurements and told me they would be ordered and should arrive in about 2 weeks. Called just one week after measurements were taken and said shades were ready to hang. Came out next day to hang them. They fit perfectly and look very nice. He cleaned up any mess from installation and disposed of my old shades. Was able to pay for balance with my master card which is a feature I always look for.

He made suggestions and was very patient with me while deciding fabrics/ design. He installed all of the products (blinds, shutters, and drapes) very well. Mrs. Gibb After I ordered the product, he called as soon as it arrived, a head of schedule. He than arrived at the scheduled time to installed the window coverings.
